In Hindi, ‘char’ means four and ‘dham’ refers to religious destinations. Apart from being religious and spiritual in nature, they are also amazing tourist attractions. The Char Dham is a sacred journey which comprises of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. It is believed that visiting the four abodes helps a person attain moksha or salvation. the formation of the original Char Dham is credited to the great 8th century reformer and philosopher Shankaracharya (Adi Sankara). In the original Char Dham, three of the four sites are Vaishnava (Puri, Dwarka and Badrinath) while one is Shaiva (Rameswaram).
