Gopeshwar is located at a height of 1300 metres above sea level in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. According to some people and the locals, the name Gopeshwar is linked with Lord Krishna.
The temple was erected somewhere around 9th and 11th century by the affluent Katyuri kings
Another hearsay is that, when Shiva was annihilating the Kshatriyas, the trident of Parshuram broke into 3 parts while pacifying Lord Shiva. A part of that trident is found in Gopinath temple.
