The legend behind the Kedarnath Temple is closely associated with Hindu mythology and Lord Shiva. According to the legend, after the great Kurukshetra war in the Mahabharata, the Pandava brothers sought the blessings of Lord Shiva to seek redemption for the sins they had committed during the war. However, Lord Shiva did not want to meet them and decided to avoid them by taking the form of a bull and hiding in the Kedarnath region.
The Pandavas, determined to find Lord Shiva, followed him to Kedarnath. They eventually recognized Lord Shiva in the form of a bull, and Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, tried to catch him.
But Lord Shiva dove into the ground, leaving behind his hump at the location where the Kedarnath Temple now stands. It is believed that the hump of Lord Shiva is worshipped in the Kedarnath Temple, while his other parts are worshipped in various other temples across the region.
This legend signifies the divine presence of Lord Shiva in Kedarnath and the importance of the Kedarnath Temple as one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus.
