How are temple lamps made in India?

Temple lamps, also known as Diyas, are a common sight in Indian temples and households. They are traditionally made of clay or metal, and the making of these lamps is considered an art form. Here are the steps involved in making temple lamps in India:

Selection of raw materials: The first step in making temple lamps is the selection of raw materials. Traditionally, clay or brass is used to make these lamps.

Preparation of the raw material: The selected raw material is then cleaned and prepared for use. If clay is used, it is mixed with water and kneaded to make a smooth dough. Brass is melted down and poured into a mould of the desired shape.

Moulding of the lamp: The prepared raw material is then moulded into the desired shape of the lamp. The clay dough is usually shaped using hands or a mould, while the molten brass is poured into a mould.

Drying: Once the lamps are shaped, they are left to dry for a few hours or overnight, depending on the material used. The clay lamps are left to dry in the sun, while the brass lamps are left to cool and solidify.

Decorating the lamps: Once the lamps are dry, they are decorated using various techniques. Clay lamps can be painted or decorated with motifs using different colours. Brass lamps are often intricately carved with designs or symbols.

Firing or polishing: After decorating the lamps, clay lamps are fired in a kiln to harden the clay and give it a finished look. Brass lamps are polished to give them a shiny finish.
